Is anything immune from extraction? What is sacred and irreplaceable?
Within the never-ending drive toward modernization, extraction knows no bounds. These relentless forces of extraction are underpinned by what the feminist collective Precarias a la Deriva call “securitary logic.” In their text "A Very Careful Strike – Four Hypotheses," they argue that such logic prioritizes control and protection, often at the expense of personal freedoms and human rights. By contrast, they advocate for a "logic of care” that places importance on long-term well-being and social cohesion. Other artists, activists, scholars, and knowledge-keepers also employ similar tactics to sustain ecosystems and culturally sovereign practices deeply rooted in a reverence for all life. Their collective efforts probe fundamental questions: how can we better care for natural resources, cultural heritage, and our mental and physical wellbeing? How can we safeguard intangible things like emotions, creativity, and relationships from being reduced to economic commodities?
