The FlagSSS Day collective’s ongoing and overarching intentions are to build community (temporary and more long-lasting), to nurture difference and collective creativity, to be visible in togetherness in public space, and to celebrate that we grieve at the same time that we acknowledge what needs transformation. The FlagSSS Day collective offers the QUIET PARADE a slowcore flag corps, a group of flag-bearing folks who engage in slow and gentle movements that incorporate lightweight flags. Smaller flags will periodically come together and attach to one another during the procession to make a large installation inspired by the snail, a supremely slow and quiet creature. When the large flag coalesces, it will form a spiral of muted colors in homage to the snail shell. When the flag breaks apart, individuals in the snail crew will utilize their portion of the flag in their movement. The movement, a gently coordinated walking meditation where the flags operate as accessories to that action, as implements for self-touch. Following FlagSSS Day Collective member dancer/performer/movement educator Hana van der Kolk’s work, this approach to movement and use of the flags will place the flag corps at the intersection of performance and shared practice for transformation and restoration. FlagSSS Day Collective sees the choreography of movements influenced by the participants and the route of the parade.
