Thang Vu
Thang Vu’s projects often blurs the distinction between visual art and the everyday. Raised in a supportive, working-class family, Vu endeavours to create work that bridges the language of daily life with the language of fine art. Through conceptual written proposals, the artist offers symbolic and practical alternatives for thinking about literature and art. Through recontextualizing meanings and definitions of objects, Vu generates dialogues about social hierarchy and social values. Rather than a direct critique of a system, Vu wishes to explore and disseminate options that have not yet been considered.
Thang Vu is a fifth year student in the UTM and Sheridan College joint Art & Art History program. Born in Vietnam, Vu has been studying abroad in Canada for the past six years. Being exposed to two cultures has broadened his perspective and informed his artistic practice. Vu understands the power of education and seeks to share his knowledge with diverse communities. He has recently exhibited in the DesignTO Festival and at the Art Gallery of Mississauga, where he was awarded the Curator’s Award for his work song by the mute.
