A method for naming and classifying things and concepts. Enlightenment-era taxonomies sought to make the world objectively knowable and classifiable, but subsequent critiques have shown these to be culturally-coded constructions. Classification gave rise to hierarchies and hegemonic relationships that facilitated colonialism, domination, and subjugation—all while these structures of control were perpetuated under the guise of scientific objectivity, morality, and altruism (see The Figure in the Carpet). Taxonomies centralize knowledge: they extract and rename plant or animal species for their regional contexts, while simultaneously creating hierarchical relationships between human and non-human life-forms through measures of intelligence, sentience, and consciousness (see The Cage is a Stage, Other Life-formings).
