Running With Scissors

Not just cut & paste. Running With Scissors offers weeklong programs designed to introduce contemporary art to children and youth ages 5 to 12. Inspired by contemporary art history as well as traditional methods, campers will be able to experiment with a variety of artistic media including painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media, performance, and more.

Running With Scissors 2012 Camps
Get ready for a fun summer of art-making! Try out our new camps Comics and Characters and Mix it Up! Or, join us for new art activities in RWS favourites such as Sculpture and Experimental Drawing and Painting.

Registration is available online, over the phone, or in person through the Recreation and Wellness Centre (RAWC) at the University of Toronto Mississauga. Registration is now open. Please click here for details on how to register.

2012 Camps for 5-8 Year Olds:

Week 1: July 3-6
Mix it Up!

This contemporary art sampler is a great way to kick off a fun summer of art-making! Each day campers will explore different art media such as experimental painting, sculpture, performance, and cartooning. $180

Week 2: July 9-13
Experimental Painting and Drawing

Explore the possibilities of drawing and painting outside the frame. Drip paint like Jackson Pollock. Draw with flashlights and capture the results in a photograph. Campers will learn new, creative approaches to painting and drawing while experimenting with a wide variety of unique materials $225

Week 3: July 16-20
Comics and Characters

Bring your wildest stories to life! Campers will explore narrative forms of art such as comics, cartooning, illustration, storybook making, and tableaux. Campers will design their own unique cartoon characters and even create a comic panel in 3-D! This is a great program for kids who love stories and cartoons regardless of reading and writing ability. $225

Week 4: July 23-27
Sculpture

Break out of the mould with this exploration of inventive approaches to sculpture. Using traditional materials and found objects, campers will have the chance to sculpt their own personal creations as well as collaborate on larger 3-D projects. Great for kids who like to build with their hands! $225

Art and Nature

The whole world is your canvas! Create artworks in and around UTM’s beautiful grounds using organic and inorganic materials. Campers will learn about the natural environment through a range of exciting art projects that include building animal habitats and creating outdoor installations. $225

Strange Landscapes

Do you have a vivid imagination? Campers will be introduced to artists who create fascinating spaces and landscapes. Through a variety of 2-D and 3-D art activities campers will develop their own imaginary worlds and also work together on a colourful large-scale mural. $180

Acting Out

For kids who want to bring their creative side to life, this camp will feature art projects that culminate in performance. Campers will take on new personas through disguise, costume, and puppetry. $225

Mixed Media

For kids who want to get messy. Campers will explore painting, collage, printmaking, and more. By combining a variety of media within each artwork, campers will discover the endless possibilities when old and new art forms collide. $225

Campers will be introduced to the work of a wide cross-section of modern and contemporary artists who have changed the way we think about painting and drawing. Learn to see in the abstract, work large-scale, and draw with light! $225

Week 3: July 16-20 Art and the Environment
The whole world is your canvas! Campers will create art in and around UTM, both in natural and built environments. Campers will learn about the importance of space, location, and environment when creating any work of art, and will get their hands dirty while doing it! $225

Sculpture

Break out of the mould! Campers will use traditional materials and found objects to construct 3-D art in the studio and out on the UTM grounds. Great for kids who like to work with their hands! Campers will learn how to use some familiar materials in unusual ways. $225

Artist Books and Paper Works

Artist’s books are artworks in their own right that take the form of a book – though not always in the traditional sense. Campers will create a variety of unique handmade books and paper works and then fill the pages with their own creations. Campers will also learn hands-on printmaking techniques, explore the history of lettering, and investigate creative uses of paper that go from 2-D to 3-D. $225

Comics and Characters

Bring your stories to life! Explore the narrative potential of art forms such as comics, cartooning, and illustration. Campers will learn about contemporary artists working with these methods while trying their hand at cartooning techniques, storyboarding, creating comic books, and collaborating on an animation. $180

Art and Architecture

For the budding young architect, this camp will take an artistic look at buildings, cities, and maps. Campers will be introduced to basic architectural concepts and traditions. They willl also have the chance to design and construct forms based on their own creative visions. $225

Staff
Our staff is comprised of university students specializing in the visual arts, art history, childhood education, or a related field. Visual art instructors have experience with different artistic media ranging from sculpture, painting, and printmaking, to video and performance art. Classes are limited to 16 participants.

Our staff-to-camper ratios are 1:6 for the 5-8 year old group (maximum 18 participants) and 1:8 for the 9-12 year old group (maximum 16 participants).

Extended Care
Extended care is available from 8:00am to 8:45am and from 4:00pm to 5:30pm daily. Extended care is not programmed but art materials will be provided for campers to use at their leisure. More individual pursuits such as reading and activity books are encouraged. The cost of extended care is $50 for the week. Each additional family member is $25.

What to Bring
- Full lunches and snacks (nut free, please)
- Appropriate clothes for art making (dress for mess!)
- Sunscreen, bug spray, a hat and a refillable water bottle
- Appropriate footwear for nature walks and active games
- An inexpensive digital camera for documenting artwork. We do have gallery cameras that are available for sharing.

To registration online, please visit the RecReg Website (https://recreg.utoronto.ca/). You will find Running with Scissors listed as 'Art Camp - Running With Scissors' under the 'Mississauga - Children and Youth' category. If you attended RWS Camps this past summer, you may use your 2011 login information and PIN to register for 2012 camps.

You can also register in person by visiting the Membership Services desk at the Recreation and Wellness Centre (RAWC) at the University of Toronto Mississauga or by calling the RAWC at 905-828-3714.

Refund Policy
To obtain a refund, you must withdrawal at least 7 days before your child’s camp starts. Refunds are subject to a $30 administrative fee per child, per camp. There are no refunds for withdrawals less than 7 days before your child’s camp begins. Exceptions can be made for medical emergencies supported with a medical note.

In the event of a medical emergency after the camp start date, a refund will be issued for the remaining days of camp less a $30 administrative fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is contemporary art?
Contemporary art refers to art produced right now and for about the last fifty years. The Blackwood Gallery focuses on contemporary art. If you’re curious about what this looks like, pay a visit to the exhibition archives on our website and those of The Powerplant Contemporary Art Gallery (Toronto) and the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery (U of T).

Where is drop off/pick up?
Regardless of which camp or age group your child is in, all drop offs and pick ups take place in the Blackwood Gallery, Kaneff Building, Room 140. Keep your eyes peeled for sandwich board signs leading the way.

Where can I Park?
Whether driving North or South on Mississauga Road it is advisable to enter campus through the Middle Entrance. The Kaneff Centre can be found by driving all the way around Inner Circle Road where the bus bay is located. For free parking, follow Outer Circle Road to the right into Parking Lot 5. Please leave your flashers on to indicate that you are dropping off a camper. For longer term parking, there are a limited number of paid parking spaces located on Inner Circle Road near the South Building. Accessible Parking spaces are located in the small loop next to the Kaneff Centre and are only for people with an MTO Accessibility sticker.  

If you are picking up your child at a time other than the designated drop off and pick up times there is temporary paid parking located on Inner Circle Road near the South Building.

Directions: How do I find the Blackwood Gallery?
The Blackwood Gallery is located in Kaneff Building on the University of Toronto Mississauga Campus. The UTM Campus is at Mississauga Road and Dundas and maps can be found here: http://www.utm.utoronto.ca/8709.0.html

When does registration close?
Registration closes the Wednesday before the start of each session.

The camp I want to register my child in is full. Is there a waitlist?
Yes, there is a waitlist. You have the option of going on the waitlist at the time of
registration.

My child is on the waitlist, how will I know when space becomes available?
Membership Services will contact you when a space becomes available. Your child’s space will be held for 24 hours. Please contact Membership Services directly if you have further questions at 905 828 3714.

My child is 8 years old, but his/her friend is registered in the 9-12 camp, can he/she be bumped up an age group?
Please register your child for the proper age group and contact the Outreach Coordinator at outreach.blackwood@utoronto.ca or 905 828 3789 to make arrangements.

My child is registered in the 5-8 age group, as is his/her friend. How can I make sure that they will be in the same group?
There are only two groups. If your child is in the same age bracket as his/her friend then they will automatically be in the same group together.

Do the children stay indoors for the whole day?
Campers will be spending time outside every day unless it is too hot or rainy to do so. Please make sure you apply sunscreen on your child before they come to camp, and pack some extra for reapplication!

Is lunch provided?
No, lunches and snacks are not provided. Please pack your child full lunches, snacks
and a clearly labeled refillable water bottle. Nut free lunches and snacks only, please!

Do I need to supply my child with a camera?
It’s optional. You may wish to send your child with an inexpensive digital camera for documenting artwork, if you have one available. We also have gallery cameras that are available for sharing.

Volunteer Opportunities

We need many volunteers throughout the summer to join our team. We require volunteers to commit to a full week of camp at a time, but you can sign up for multiple weeks if you are looking for a longer term experience. This is an ideal volunteer experience for post-secondary students to gain experience in the arts and working with children.
