Running With Scissors

Not just cut & paste. Running With Scissors offers weeklong programs designed to introduce contemporary art to children and youth ages 5 to 12. Inspired by contemporary art as well as traditional methods, campers will be able to experiment with a variety of media including photography, sculpture, mixed media, drawing, and painting.

Running With Scissors 2011 Camps
Our 2011 programs have been set. Same as last year, registration is done through the Recreation and Wellness Centre (RAWC) at the University of Toronto Mississauga. Registration opens February 24 at 8am. >Take me directly to the Running With Scissors registration page!

If your kids are returning campers to Running With Scissors, you'll notice that we have a number of new camp themes such as Artist's Books and Paper Works and Art and Architecture. As well, we are offering a full slate of new camp offerings for the 5-8 year old age group, based on the capabilities and interests of that age group. Check back for our 2011 camp guide, and be sure to check out the photos of our 2010 camper projects.

Camps for 5-8 Year Olds:

Week 1: July 4-8
Experimental Drawing and Painting

Still painting still lifes? Explore the possibilities of drawing and painting outside the frame. Draw with flashlights and capture the light graffiti on camera. Drip paint like Jackson Pollock. Create a life-size projection that you can be a part of. $225

Strange Landscapes

Imagine visiting a strange new world. What does the landscape look like? What kind of ship helped you get there? Are there new and unusual animals? Campers will explore an imaginary world through arts activities. $225

Art and Storytelling

This camp will draw its inspiration from storybooks and storytelling. Campers will explore narrative forms of art such as illustration, comics, and tableaux, and come up with their own stories to tell. $225

Acting Out

For kids who want to bring their creative side to life, this camp will feature art projects that culminate in performance. Campers will take on new personas through disguise, costume, and puppetry. $225

Sites and Sounds

Does your teacher tell you to stop making silly noises? Not here! This camp will explore ways to be creative with sound and space. Campers will build instruments, make maps, and explore their surroundings through art activities. $180 (No camp holiday Monday)

Building Up and Breaking Down

For the builder at heart, this camp will explore basic building techniques as well as the fun of breaking stuff down. We will draw on the ideas of assembling and disassembling in non-architectural art projects as well. $225

Art and Nature

The whole world is your canvas! Campers will create art in and around UTM’s beautiful grounds using organic and inorganic materials. Learn about camouflage, construct animal homes, and create an indoor garden. $225

Mixed Media

Campers will try their hand at painting, collage, printmaking, and more. For the kid who loves to get messy and try everything, this camp explores the endless possibilities when old and new art forms collide! $225

Sculpture

Break out of the mould! Campers will use traditional materials and found objects to construct 3-D art in the studio and out on the UTM grounds. Great for kids who like to work with their hands! Campers will learn how to use some familiar materials in unusual ways. $225

Art and the Moving Image

Where will your art go? Can you wear it when you leave the house? Will it leap up off the page? This camp explores different types of art that share movement in common. A sculpture that moves, a flipbook animation, or a wearable piece of art all depend on movement to get their message across. $225

Artist’s Books and Paper Works

Artist’s books are artworks in their own right that take the form of a book. Campers will have a high degree of freedom in how they fill their handmade books. Campers will learn hands-on printmaking techniques and explore the history of lettering as well as investigating other creative uses of paper that go from 2-D to 3-D. $225

Staff
Our staff is comprised of university students specializing in the visual arts, art history, childhood education, or a related field. Visual art instructors have experience with different artistic media ranging from sculpture, painting, and printmaking, to video and performance art. Classes are limited to 16 participants.

Extended Care
Extended care is available from 8:00am to 8:45am and from 4:00pm to 5:30pm daily. Extended care is not programmed but art materials will be provided for campers to use at their leisure. More individual pursuits such as reading and activity books are encouraged. The cost of extended care is $50 for the week. Each additional family member is $25.

What to Bring
- Full lunches and snacks (nut free, please)
- Appropriate clothes for art making.
- Sunscreen, bug spray, a hat and a refillable water bottle. 
- An inexpensive digital camera for documenting artwork. We do have gallery cameras that are available for sharing.

You can register for camps online using the eConnect website at econnect.fpeh.utoronto.ca.
Running With Scissors art camps are listed under Children and Youth – UTM or you can search by activity code. You can also register in person by visiting the Membership Service desk at the Recreation and Wellness Centre (RAWC) at the University of Toronto Mississauga or by calling them at 905-828-3714.

Refund Policy
To obtain a refund, you must withdrawal at least 7 days before your child’s camp starts. Refunds are subject to a $30 administrative fee per child, per camp. There are no refunds for withdrawals less than 7 days before your child’s camp begins. Exceptions can be made for medical emergencies supported with a medical note.

In the event of a medical emergency after the camp start date, a refund will be issued for the remaining days of camp less a $30 administrative fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is contemporary art?
Contemporary art refers to art produced right now and for about the last fifty years. The Blackwood Gallery focuses on contemporary art. If you’re curious about what this looks like, pay a visit to the exhibition archives on our website and those of The Powerplant Contemporary Art Gallery (Toronto) and the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery (U of T).

When does registration close?
Registration closes the Wednesday before the start of each session.

The camp I want to register my child in is full. Is there a waitlist?
Yes, there is a waitlist. You have the option of going on the waitlist at the time of
registration.

My child is on the waitlist, how will I know when space becomes available?
Membership Services will contact you when a space becomes available. Your child’s space will be held for 24 hours. Please contact Membership Services directly if you have further questions at 905 828 3714.

My child is 8 years old, but his/her friend is registered in the 9-12 camp, can he/she be bumped up an age group?
Please register your child for the proper age group and contact the Outreach Coordinator at outreach.blackwood@utoronto.ca or 905 828 3789 to make arrangements.

My child is registered in the 5-8 age group, as is his/her friend. How can I make sure that they will be in the same group?
There are only two groups. If your child is in the same age bracket as his/her friend then they will automatically be in the same group together.

Do the children stay indoors for the whole day?
Campers will be spending time outside every day unless it is too hot or rainy to do so. Please make sure you apply sunscreen on your child before they come to camp, and pack some extra for reapplication!

Is lunch provided?
No, lunches and snacks are not provided. Please pack your child full lunches, snacks
and a clearly labeled refillable water bottle. Nut free lunches and snacks only, please!

Do I need to supply my child with a camera?
It’s optional. You may wish to send your child with an inexpensive digital camera for documenting artwork, if you have one available. We also have gallery cameras that are available for sharing.

Summer Job and Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Opportunities:

Volunteer applications will be posted here in mid-March. We need lots of volunteers throughout the summer to join our team. We require volunteers to commit to a full week of camp at a time, but you can sign up for multiple weeks if you are looking for a longer term experience.

Running With Scissors is a visual arts day camp for children ages 5 to 12. Full-day, weeklong workshops are offered in various media including, moving image (stop-motion animation, Photoshop tutorials, learning the principles of the video camera), photography, sculpture, mixed media, digital art, drawing and painting, and outdoor art (inspired by land art). Running With Scissors introduces campers to non-traditional, experimental, and conceptual forms of art, in a non-competitive, self-directed environment.

Job Description
Project Coordinators are responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the camp, which could include, but is not limited to, leading a team of 4 instructors, reserving classrooms and proper tech equipment, answering parent questions related to camp programming and registration, ordering supplies, and managing budgets.

Additional Responsibilities
-Assist in the research and development of age-appropriate arts programming for school aged children.
-Supervise classroom instruction regularly and report back to the Outreach Coordinator on a weekly basis.
-Submit a final report and recommendations at the conclusion of the summer.
-Recruit, hire, and manage volunteers.
-Ensure all materials and activities are safe for children.

Qualifications
-Enrollment in an accredited post-secondary institution studying arts administration, art history, visual arts, childhood education, or a related field (returning full-time in September 2011).
-Knowledge of contemporary art and art practices.
-Strong communication, programming, and organisational skills.
-Previous experience working with school-aged children in an educational, or day camp setting. 
-Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite, Photoshop, Flash, and Windows Movie Maker.
-Experience managing budgets.
-Demonstrated ability to work in a team.
-Access to a car is an asset but not a requirement.

-Provide a positive learning and recreational experience for participating campers.

-Enrolled in an accredited post-secondary institution studying childhood education, physical education, recreation and leisure, visual arts, art history, or a related field (returning full-time in September 2011).

AFTERCARE PROVIDER

Job Description
The aftercare provider works alongside program coordinators, visual and recreation instructors, and gallery staff to provide after-camp care for children ages 5 to 12. Aftercare providers work an average of 2.5 hours a day, from 3:30pm – 6pm. This job would be ideal for a university summer student.

Responsibilities
-To assist instructors, coordinators and gallery staff with extended childcare.
-Camp runs from 9am – 4pm, with afternoon extended care provided between the hours of 4pm – 5:30pm. After-care providers would be expected to set up art and crafts materials in the gallery and/or outside, and assist with the general care of children until they are picked up by their parent or guardian.
-Create a warm atmosphere where campers feel comfortable working, learning, and asking questions.
-Supervise children, provide suggestions for individual pursuits (such as reading or colouring), and promote positive interactions with others.
-Clean up all materials, and prepare the gallery for the next day’s session.

Qualifications
-Previous experience working with school aged children in an educational or day camp setting. Knowledge and/or experience working with children in a recreational setting (outdoor environmental education, sports, leadership camps) is an asset.
-Demonstrated ability to work in a team.
