The UTM/St. George shuttle bus offers regular pick-up/drop off service departing from Hart House (7 Hart House Circle), and arriving directly at the Instructional Centre at UTM.
Students with a valid UTM student ID card are eligible to travel free of charge. Non students must purchase a ticket from the Porter's Desk at Hart House or from the Student Centre at UTM. Tickets are $6.00 each way.

Via TTC/Mississauga Transit
Mississauga Transit buses depart from Islington subway station for UTM approximately every 20 minutes. Regular fare is $3.00 and the UTM bus layby is located directly in front of the Kaneff Centre, wherein lies the Blackwood Gallery.

There are two options:

On weekdays from 6:41am-9:18am and 3:31pm-6:55pm you can take the new "101 West to Oakville via UTM Express." This bus leaves from the last platform of the bus bay near the ticket clerk's booth (though 101 is not listed on the sign at the bottom of the stairs). The ride takes only 36 minutes.

At other times of the day or on weekends, you can take the "1C West" bus, which takes the same route but makes all the stops. The ride takes 55 minutes. This bus runs until midnight.

For exact times and fares, please visit the Mississauga Transit website.

Via GO Train / Bus
Clarkson GO Train station is located at the bottom of Erin Mills Parkway (turning into Southdown Road).
Erindale station is the closest GO Bus terminal; however, there are no direct routes to the campus. Transfers must be taken down Burnhamthorpe and Mississauga Road. For routes, schedules and fares, please visit the Go Transit website.

From Toronto, visitors may take the Gardiner Expressway to the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) Westbound. Exit the highway at Mississauga Road and turn north as indicated by the signs. HISTORY

Opened in 1969 as the Erindale College Art Gallery—the first public art gallery in the Peel region—the Gallery was renamed in 1992 in honour of Canadian artist David Blackwood who was artist-in-residence at UTM from 1967-1971 (www.davidblackwood.com). The Blackwood family marked the occasion by making a significant gift of art works that remain a cornerstone of the Blackwood’s permanent collection.

SUBMISSIONS

The Blackwood Gallery is a public not-for-profit contemporary art gallery affiliated with the University of Toronto. It is located on the Mississauga campus of U of T and is part of the Department of Visual Studies. Exhibitions are programmed one to two years in advance. They are devised by the gallery's curator based on constant research at the local, national, and international levels. Submissions are accepted from artists and guest curators either electronically or physically on an ongoing basis, there are no deadlines. There are no guidelines for formatting your submission, use your best judgement. Packages will not be returned, nor will we necessarily respond or acknowledge receipt. This is not a sign of disinterest, merely one of time management. Rest assured, everything is scrutinized. Do consult our website to get a sense of our predilections, though we are open to seemingly incongruous proposals. Contemporary art is best when it does not resemble itself. Please address your submission to Christof Migone, Director/Curator, Blackwood Gallery.

VOLUNTEER

If you are interested in the visual arts and/or art history, in cultural studies or anthropology, volunteer positions at the Blackwood Gallery provide excellent opportunities to develop professional experience and contacts in a lively and stimulating context.

PERMANENT COLLECTION

The Blackwood Gallery maintains a collection of over 450 works of Canadian art including works by Carl Beam, Rebecca Belmore, Tom Dean, Vera Frenkel, Charles Pachter, and Michael Snow. The collection focuses on prints by contemporary Ontario artists but also contains a collection of Inuit prints and small sculpture, and a number of paintings by 19th-century painter Charlotte Schreiber. Schreiber’s work was collected due to its pertinence to the local record, as she was an inhabitant of the land prior to the development of Erindale College/University of Toronto Mississauga and noteworthy in her own right as the first female academician of the Royal Canadian College of Art.

Works from the collection are loaned to members of the faculty and staff of the University of Toronto Mississauga for use in their offices, as well as installed in public spaces on campus including the Hazel McCallion Academic Learning Centre and the Office of the Dean.

Please click here to view a selection of images from the newly digitized permanent collection and to read the comissioned essays on works from the collection by Sara Angel, Wanda Nanibush, and Carol-Ann Ryan.
